Anime Convention

Sat Mar 21, 2009, 8:15 PM
So I maybe displaying and selling my art at an Anime Convention soon, is there any advice you can give a first timer, whether you've been an artist in the Artist's Alley or a passerby at a convention?

Should I even bother? Am I even qualified to post stuff up?

So if you have ever been to an Anime Convention in your life, all comments would be greatly appreciated!

And for you fans out there, this means that I'll be able to have some new merchandise for sale! Stay tuned for cool new bookmark designs, buttons and maybe a lunchbox or two!

Also, what existing deviation(s) should I bring to the show?

You're more than qualified! I just say bring some fan art of the popular stuff as well as your original work since really... people react to that the best. Also grow ultra thick skin since yer average joe doesn't care to be rude right to your face! Also... bring table grub just for yourself since you'll get hungry. And beware of con funk!

Thanks for the helpful tips dude! Which cons have you been to?

I'm trying to get into Fanime 2009, I might be able to split a table with a buddy, I just need all the paperwork to be finalized!

You're qualified. Better yet, you're over qualified. I've seen all sorts put there stuff up,.. and it's not always good. It's the quanitity that seems to matter.

People have begged me for YEARS to set up a table at Acen... i just know I couldn't sit there.

Sadly i've only worked the same one for 4 years. Tusbasacon is a local one for me. It's been rough! But profitable. Mua ha ha. Having said that... I asked all the artist through out the years that have attended and they said that you get the same stinks and rough attitudes everywhere. But it's fun. You make great friends! And if you just stick in there long enough you'll get a loyal following. By year 2 I had a few people who were hey! I know you! By year 3 people were asking if I'd be attending. By year 4 people were coming with commission lists ready. You are pretty talented so I know your stuff will kill wherever ya go.

Oh, great con. I live in the Silicon Valley area, but because of Anime North I can't make it, which is ironic.

Good luck getting in!

Why thank you so much! I might have to bring a friend, because I know sitting in one spot for four days will drive me crazy!

This is sort of late and maybe not relevant anymore, but: your work is definitely qualified! It's quality stuff for sure, and while it has some anime influence, it's definitely got its own flavor that makes it valuable as standalone art.

I'd recommend doing some postcards: they'll sell well because they're not a huge investment for people who aren't familiar with your work, they can buy lots of different designs, and you can share them/send them as "Hello from InsertNameofCon" cards.

Also, if you're feeling ambitious in the future, an anime featuring your character work would not go amiss :)
